Think About Turning Today!
For those of us without an air conditioned shop its been a
hot summer. That will make it a treat to do a shift at this year's Fair Booth in
the "cool" Hobby Hall. Tuesday evening the fair booth committee attempted to
call all our members to schedule some of
the shifts. About 1/2 are filled; you can call anyone on the list to set a time.
Wayne Hoffman 598-4285
Paul Spencer 861-6718
Jerry Fachner 655-9451
Stan Lambert 348-3499
Martin Robinson is also on the committee but was out of town for our meeting on
Tues. & so does not have a list. Each day of the fair will have one of these
committee persons in charge. They will be listed on the sheet handed out at Wed.
meeting and posted at the booth. We expect some confusion with this method: but
it is our attempt not to "burn out" one chairman with
an over-load of the long days at the fair. Please understand any hitches in our
"get-a-long! The shifts are only 3 hours this year; and you can certainly
sign up for more than one. There will be 3 lathes at the booth. You need to
bring your own tools and chucks plus any particular wood you wish to turn.
There will also be some wood in the booth that club members have donated for you
to turn if you don't have anything special that you want to work on. Past
experience has taught us that the public soon is bored watching an extensive
amount of sanding; so we try to keep that phase at a minimum. It is also helpful
if your items have some of the set-up work done at home. Our adoring public
likes to see the chips a-flying!
Your Fine Arts entries can still be entered (without pre-entry) at the "Cedar
Hall" Building on Friday, Aug. 3 from 1:00 - 6:00 pm and on Sat. Aug. 4 from
10:00 - 5:00 pm. This can be a good learning exercise to help us better
understand what the public (and the judges) are looking for in our wood turned
items. Items brought in for display at our booth can be locked in the display
cabinet. These turnings should include: a description, kind of wood, & your name;
so that we can make nice uniform placards for a better display.
Joyce will bring the 41 pieces of Iowa cherry, walnut, and maple to be
auctioned / raffled at Wednesday's meeting. Last month the Approx. 30 bowl banks
brought in $275 netting our raffle fund $175 after sending the nice gentleman
from Des Moines a
check for $100 as "gas" money. I anticipate we can treat ourselves to the
remaining wood for a bargain of approximately $2.50 each putting another hundred
into the raffle fund.
Keep making those "Bic" pens - we can't have to many! Tops and miniature
goblets are okay also. As Ron Musgrave has so generously offered to let our
club hold our monthly meetings in his shop; and those at the July meeting seemed
in favor of not going back to the Career Center (due to the noisy over-head
heaters) we will likely vote this month on making Ron's shop our permanent home.
See you at the meeting.
