MINUTES OF JULY 12, 2006

President Ed Auker opened the meeting at 7:00 PM and stated that Randy Fortiner’s father had passed away in California and that it looked like Randy will be moving there to take over the lemon orchard that his father had been running.

Minutes of June meeting

The minutes of the June meeting had been printed out by the secretary and passed out to those present. Correction noted that under the item of show and tell the names of the two Torrence brothers had been listed wrong. This noted the minutes where approved as corrected.

Treasurer’s report

Mick Hogg gave his treasurer’s report which included the amount set aside for the raffle fund.

Correspondence

Dan Schindler reported that he had a visit with Walt Ricker he wished everyone well and said that Mary had been busy Grand mothering, They now live in South Dakota.

Dan also said that he had talked to TJ and he plans to hold another tool fair this year and will advise later when a date is confirmed. TJ would also like some input as to what the wood turners would like to see him carry in the store, he has stocked a number of wood turning tools now but will stock other items if we would be interested.

Dan also mentioned to TJ that the store often had trees available in back of the store for the wood turners to get some free wood for turning and he said he would look into that.

Dan had suggested some glues and waterlux finish someone said this finish was available at Tru-Value in Hardin

Regarding glues, Jerry Rhoades said that you can purchase real fresh Super Glue at either Central Hobby Shop or Jims Junction.

Secretary said he had received a brochure of the Rocky Mountain Symposium at Loveland, Colorado which will be held Sept 15-17 and I understand several members had received it.

Committee reports

A&E committee needs volunteers for demonstrations Red said he will be doing some more inside/outside turning in September sounds like he has a new twist on this, He also stated that super glue should be kept at room temperature once it has been opened instead of being refrigerated as has been done in the past. He also asked what the membership would like to see being done for demonstrations.

Fair committed chaired by John Tuttle had a sign up sheet to show when you would be willing and able to work and from these sheets he will make up a master sheet and have it available for the next meeting.

Pre-entry is required and they must be in by July 28th . Exhibits received at Cedar Hall Aug 4th and 5th, no exhibits accepted after 5;00 PM Aug 5th

John Wasden gave a good run down on the Rocky Mountain Symposium at Loveland Colorado and also a detailed report on the Utah Woodturning Symposium stating that at this symposium they have a good representation of sales representatives such as Craft Supply etc . Craft Supply has a one day special sale of discontinued items, used items etc and you can really save some money (or spend a lot) at this sale.  The entry fee is $220.00 which some times is one of the lesser costs at least it was for John. This was his third highest cost after the motel and Craft Supply purchases.

John was explaining one of the classes was on various types of sanding and Red O’Connell asked John to put on a demonstration of this at out October meeting and it was decided that John would do this along with having group discussions too.

Old Business

Jail House Gallery, Dave said the lady running it was very appreciative of the items on display and really thought that having some of our turner there on June 24th added a lot to the interest of the people attending. She also sent some checks to some of our members who had their items sold which to date totaled $967.00

Tear down at Hardin will be August 1st and Dave will bring the leftover items to the next meeting but will call members having items returned, when he gets back in case they want to pick them up to enter them in the fair.

New Business

Being Randy will no longer be with us to put out the news letter we must now take action to get this resolved..  After much discussion it was decided that Paul Spencer would be our new Editor and take over the duties that Randy has done so capable in the past.

Randy thanks for all your good work,

Ron Musgrave asked what the possibility would be to have some kind of get together just for a social time like a club picnic, Christmas party or what ever. This was thought to be a good idea but was tabled for the present.

Also brought up was the possibility of having simple project as a club challenge giving some simple prize to the winner. This was also tabled .

Show & Tell

Red O’Connell displayed four small bowls which Ed Auker will be taking to place in the Jail House Gallery for him.

Ron Musgrave had a segmented bowl

Francis Swaby had a lamp made of locust and cedar

Stan Lambert had a nice black walnut bowl and some tops/.

Bob Orr had a fishing rod case made by his brother in Colorado who was a guest at our meeting a few months ago. Bob is also looking for plans to make a bubble gum machine.

John Tuttle had a Red Elm bowl and two bowls made of Canadian hard wood.

Break Time

It’s time to enjoy some coffee and cookies compliments of the Billings Hardware and do a little visiting.

Demonstration

Dan Schindler had a gouge which was magnetized and with the help of Les Dyrud they showed how you can de-magnetize this tool .

Dan gave a very good presentation of how to obtain FREE WOOD, He said that he was helping Ron Musgrave cut down a black walnut stump that was about 12 feet high and the old boy at the place where they were cutting it down said that his father had used the tree as a place to hang his garden hose and sure enough they run into a piece of iron imbedded in the tree not only one piece but two and then there was an eye bolt about 5/8" in diameter 7" long with some wire sticking out of the tree so they knew it was there but in the process of cutting it out they managed to cut into it, so, this free wood cost them 3 chains for Ron’s chain saw.

Dan also had a book called "Turning Green Wood" which gave several ideas how to cut up a tree to give you the best bowls.
