From the Editor

With the change in the Meeting format, we are also changing when the News letter is being emailed and mailed out.  With this change all announcements to be placed in the News Letter will need to be in to Paul by the Friday following the Club meeting.  We are making this change so all member can read the minutes from the Business meeting and have a chance to make there opinions known to the club Presidency.  All members are welcome to attend the business meeting that will follow the Regular Club meeting and presentations.

Those who did not attend the business meeting and wish to know the status of the Clubs funds can contact the club Treasurer, Jane Swaby (406)248-7507.

Think About Turning Today!

Our July Gathering began at 7:00 PM. with no guests and cookies provided by Joyce Fiechtner.  They were good but a slight fish flavor.  Thank you very much Joyce!  Under "correspondence" I reported a major upheaval in the AAW as  Board Members requested the resignation of Executive Director Mary Lacer citing performance issues.  We now have correspondence from Mary refuting these issues and the boards actions which I will read at our next meeting.  Speaking of which, please remember the meeting has moved to August 4th due to our Hobby Hall fair Booth.  Also please remember to pay your Symposium dues to recieve your $15.00 early bird discount. thats $80.00 for both days.  August 4th is the final day for the discount.  We also need to fill out the following days and time slots for the Hobby Fair Booth - 3 Slots on August 14th to work with Paul Spencer:  4 slots on Aug. 15th to work with don Buska: 1 slot (6:00 - 9:00) Aug. 16th with M Robinson:  and 2 other (6:00 - 9:00) slots on Fri. Aug. 20th.  We are also need of a setup and take down crews for Sunday Aug 8th at 10:00 AM. and Aug 22nd at 9:00 AM.  The sign-up sheet will be passed around at the next meeting.

Symposium Director Stan Lambert is asking for more Items to be donated for the "silent auction" at the symposium.  Those new or slightly used extra's that we might have lying around our shop.  We are still looking for a Committee Head for the auction.  due to the loss of use of my right hand doc Van has taken over a project I had in mind - that of sending symposium entry forms to about 90 AAW listed members in Montana and Wyoming.  Paul added the information about Delta"s door prize of the midi-lathe to the forms sent out.  maybe this will boost entries.  Makes for pretty good odds.  The club will reimburse Doc for the postage.  While we are talkin symposium let's vote on a new restaurant for the presenters dinner.  I would suggest Saturday night since restaurants  are more busy on Friday nights and if out of town people as cheap as I am they will avoid a Friday night motel and drive in on Saturday morning so a the Saturday night meal would have better attendance.  Since Joyce has again graciously volunteered to host a meal, I would suggest a smaller, more up close with the presenter and maybe less work Friday night meal at her house.

Good news1 Don will be staying in Billings after all.  Seems he would have to move to sea level to help his condition and  Helena would not accomplish that.  He is in the process of moving though, just here in town.  So on July 20th club members moved his shop.  Oaul, George, Mick, Don and Dwaine did all the work and I watched and supplied one trailer.

Doc Van again started off "show and tell" featuring Gary Slanina's huge shop near Edger MT.  A beautiful shop to be sure and wouldn't it be nice to have that much space.  Paul presented a lidded bowl with Corian inlay and a handled screw driver.  Red showed next with a large red elm lidded vase and a large open walnut vase.  Beautiful turning and very nice detail work and finish.  Joyce presented a very nice open bowl.  Dan followed last with a picture showing a burl on a tree and what to look for.

The monthly presentation was given by doc Van - a promo DVD on the Rockwell Jawhorse Workbench System.  What a handy little devil...  the jawhorse not Doc, but then again who knows??  We had ato love the enthusiasm Doc showed in his presentation.  That was GREAT!

Due to several requests we held a wood raffel after the Presentation.  Wood was some recently harvested russian olive and stan supplied some ash and elm while Paul supplied some packs of Corian.  The proceeds went to the club treasury.

The Business Meeting - Followed the Gathering.

Reminder to our members,
It's not to early to knockout some "Bic" pens  and/or tops for the Fair booth give-a-way.
The Symposium is looking better each day ( I received 3 registrations today - one from Wyoming and one from Kalispel ).
I also had an e-mail from a club in Arizona about their symposium in Feb. 2011.  They are featuring 6 to 8 turners for 3 days at a cost
of $250. Their lead demonstrator is Mike Mahoney.
As we are planning a "Silent Auction" at the symposium we need donated items ( the Bismarck club made $1,200 with their auction this spring.)
