Think About Turning Today!

Good things happening!
The A & E Committee met this past Tuesday at Ray's office ( and he fed us lunch - "there are benefits to pinching-in").
The Audit Comm. was just finishing up; and that chore is done. We thank you.
We had some group discussions, and have made some positive starts for activities reflecting what club members voted to proceed with in 2009.
1] Made a start on our Oct. symposium plans
a] Trent Bosch will be our "expert' from our of town, he is a nationally known turner/demonstrator out of Colorado. We have some of his tapes. We decided to fill the balance of the weekend with more local talent; which may be a session of Sam Angelo, out of Wyoming, and some of our own members if we can get the volunteers to do some shorter expert demos on their specialties.
2] We have the start of a systematic plan for handling the Hobby Hall Booth.
3] We will be discussing an idea for monthly programs at this next meeting. It was Dan Schindler's suggestion at our Jan. meeting to assign members (from our membership list) to provide each month's demo/program.
This would require them to either do a program or find someone to do it.
Benefits of such a system would be more member participation and learning from your own "teaching". Not wanting to make anyone upset over being appointed to such a revolving committee, we will discuss and vote on a best way to handle this method of obtaining a systematic way of having a learning session at each meeting.
4] We have confirmation from Ace Hardware in the Heights to hold an outdoor demo in May or June of this year. I have also contacted Billings Hardware about doing one there also, and am waiting to hear back from T.J.
5] We sold about one half of Ron's stock pile of tunable wood ( $150 of mostly Walnut ) plus most of the equipment & tools that Trudy & Kevin wanted out of the shop.  The rest will be available on the 11th, and the balance of the wood will be put on consignment at A&H Turf ( they only charge 30% of any sold price ).
6] This month's program will be surprise demo(?) by Ed Auker. Thank you Ed.
7] West High classes will continue though at least April of this year.
8] That reminds me; Jeff Miede, West's shop teacher, has offered to make
a larger sign ( like our laser cut one ) of about 4 X 4 foot that we can place or hang on Ron's shop building. We need to vote on providing the material for this project.
9] Diana Sherman of the Fair's Fine Art Building tells me we still have time to make suggestions about how our part of the Fair Book is printed as
she will meet with the Fair Board shortly after our meeting on the 11th.
    Pres. Stan Lambert
p.s. We still need a secretary if "you" should feel so inclined. Thanks Carol Reimann for feeling in for January.

Ccommittee Reports - A&E - Ways to get new members in 2009 - fair, symposium, classes, etc. Discussion about amount of work required for committee members, Dan Schindler asked the club members to participate more in club activities and get more involved in making things happen because it’s just too much work for a couple of people. Schindler also suggested that we initiate a monthly program perhaps in alphabetical order people would be asked to do some sort of presentation at one monthly meeting per year. If they did not want to do the presentation themselves, they’d be responsible for getting some one else to do it.

Symposium - possible Oct 2009 - Ray Curtis said that the AAW has a file online that is easy to use to set up a symposium. Some instructors who may be available would be Trent Bosch at about $600/day + travel from Loveland, CO, Sam Angelo $250/day+ travel from WY, Kurt Febuld (tech. segmented turning), John Jacobs from TN. Cost for Alan Lacer at 2008 symposium was $1486.50 ($1000 provided in AAW grant). Members to think about costs, Wayne Stahley offered his home to host the instructors for 2009 symposium. Need to make up meeting about symposium.
