Message From The President
Think Of Turning Today!
Having been an Optimist Club member for 38 years, I'm optimistic about the Yellowstone Woodturners continuing all of our endeavors into 2007.
As it seems our club was formed and exists for "all" its members to be better at their individual craft and enjoy fellowship with members of similar interests; That should be our "main aim" going into 2007.
Dan Schindler and Ed Auker (plus all of the past officers) have done a wonderful job of obtaining these goals. It is to everyone's benefit if we work together to continue this process by voicing our desires and pitching in where needed.
I have heard more programs (demos) at our meetings would be welcome: and we will be discussing lots of old and new ideas in January as to making choices of which programs and projects the members want and in what order.
If you should miss the meeting on January 10th, do not forget the shop seminars on January 20th.
Stan Lambert, President.
Minutes:
MINUTES OF DECEMBER 13, 2006
Meeting called to order by President Auker at 7:00 PM, there were31members and 2 guests present. The guests were Bob Gill From Lewistown (a friend of Floyd Creekmore) and Wayne Stahley. Wayne joined as a member tonight, Welcome as our newest member Wayne.
HOW AND TELL
Ed Auker brought back one of the items he had with him last meeting and showed how you could point out the flat spots by using a straight edge along the edge of the bowl/vase, just slowly rock the straight edge back and forth and you will be able to see the flat spot. Ed had used a burnished edge scraper on the 3 or 4 items he showed and had used a lacquer finish on them and they were extremely smooth.
Paul Spencer had a lighted nativity scene that he had made using a scroll saw, using thin plywood. He also had a unique jewelry box mounted on a stand with a bowl shaped unit to hold the jewelry with a lid with pegs extruding from around the bowl to hold necklaces.
Ray Curtis had a jewelry box and four bowls that had been started at the fair and later finished at home, He also had a square bowl with a turned top and bottom.
Don Buska stole the show again with several segmented bowls that he had used Baltic birch plywood cutting the segments with compound angles, using different angles in each bowl for different effects. Don used Formby’s Tung oil for the finish and he got a rousing round of applause for his work.
Dave Torrence had made a walking stick (cane) using a oak center then overlaid with black walnut then turned it and when the oak started to show thru the black walnut, he quit turning it, The handle was made from a branch with the correct turn on it to make the handle. He also had one Christmas ornament using off center turning (said he used up a lot of wood before he got that one figured out) and another hollow turned Christmas ornament with an icicle and he had put musical notes on the hollow turned portion and you might know that Randy Fortiner figured out what the song was from reading the notes.
Bob Orr showed off his Bull s— grinder. .
Stan Lambert had a very thin wine glass/tumbler made from plum and a bowl with lid turned from blood wood with curly maple liner both on the bowl and lid and another large bowl that was a combination segmented and solid turning.
Dan Schindller said he had been asked how he turned a ball inside the project he had on display at the last meeting made from the bowling pin and he showed off several items with a ball turned inside that he had made in the past and said that he started out using a carving knife to make these items and passed around a book with instructions for carving these kinds of things. He has had this book for a long time and said that was the way he started to make them with a carving knife and a lot of sandpaper
Dan also showed a pill box with hand chased threads that was made of iron wood

The minutes were accepted as printed in the New Letter.
Bob Orr said he sent the minutes to his brother and he took them to his wood turning club in Denver and they were discussed at their meeting.

Stan Lambert and John Tuttle had donated a box of wood for drawing, some of these woods were black walnut–butter nut–Russian olive–maple –Winners picked the item they wanted.
President Ed closed the meeting and everyone enjoyed coffee and cookies compliments of the Billings Hardware.
DEMONSTRATION
The demonstration tonight is how to line up your table saw by Mick Hogg;
There were only 3 members present who did not own a table saw.
Mick says the first thing he does is to line up the blade using a miter gauge (he also said you could use a feeler gauge), he lines up the saw blade with the miter slot, marking the tooth on the saw blade close to the operator, then using the same tooth as far away from the operator as possible, making any adjustment that is necessary. He stated that most all blades have a little wobble to them.
Nest adjust the fence. The fence farthest away from you should be 30 to 50 thousands of an inch
further away from the blade to prevent the board from binding when being cut..
Next line up the belt, so it runs true.
Mick then demonstrated a few tips to be used when setting your saw up for ripping or crosscutting.
Thanks Mick for a job well done.
