January 2006                          Vol. 7, No. 1

Minutes:

Minutes of the meeting held December 14, 2005:
Meeting opened by President Ed Auker at 7:00 PM with 28 members present.
Minutes of the previous meeting as printed in the December news letter were accepted as printed.
President Auker called on Treasurer Mick Hogg for the Treasurer's report.

Dues for 2006
After some discussion it was decided to keep the dues at $25.00 instead of raising the dues to build up the demonstration fund.  It was decided that if we have a demonstration, those attending would be asked to contribute to the cause.

Correspondence:
President Auker read a letter from Mary Lacer, resource director of the AAW, to notify  everyone that  the dues for AAW are due.  She also reminded everyone of the challenge put on by AAW, but no one locally seemed to be interested in that as it had been brought up at a previous meeting.

Committee Reports:

The nominating committee, chaired by Dan Schindler, reported that they had talked to a lot of people with a lot of good ideas, but they were not interested in becoming an officer of our club.
He explained that Ed Auker had agreed to take the President's position for another year if the members wanted him to.  Dan said he would also accept the President's position and these two would have to be write in votes on the ballot.
After the elections were completed the positions were filled as follows: President - Ed Auker, Vice President - Wayne Hoffman, Treasurer - Mick Hogg, and Secretary - Dwaine Beckman.

Old Business: None

New Business:

John Tuttle is having back surgery Thursday at St Vincents.
Mick Hogg said he still had some Yellowstone Woodturners hats available for $7.50 and that the new ones would be costing $10.00.

President Auker said he had some ideas about ADuties@

Duties that the club members have to their host (Billings Hardware): Members should come early enough to help set up for the meeting and stay after the meeting to help clean up and put chairs away etc. It should not be left for Walt to do this.

Billings Hardware puts on two tool demonstrations a year and members should make themselves available to work the demonstrations during this time, as by us being there and putting on a demonstration.  This is a drawing card for customers to show up at the hardware store and hopefully purchase some tools.

Duty of club to new members:  Everyone was a beginner at some point and the main purpose of the club is to help these members become better turners.  Ron Musgrave referred to the Saturday sessions he has held at his shop and suggested that the beginner should come out to this and actually work on the lathe, with some of the older heads there to help them.

Duties of our older members: should be working on more difficult items.

Finally Duties to the club itself: Someone has to step up to help the club.

John Wasden stated that as the club is giving to the club member, the member should give back to the club.

Dan Schindler passed the gavel to our newly elected President, Ed Auker.

Demonstration(s):

We were fortunate enough to have two demonstrations tonight put on by Ed Auker and Dan Schindler.

Ed showed his skills by turning a piece of box elder that was about 3 inches in diameter and about 7 inches long into a small bowl with wings that ended up being the feet for the project.

Ed did a good job of explaining the proper way to hold the gouge while making the cuts and also how to turn down hill to avoid getting a catch.

Dan turned out a nice goblet.  I did not get a chance to watch him turn but he must have had a really hard and dried piece of wood that he was working on from the sounds coming from that part of the room.

Dwaine W Beckman, Secretary

.

 Show and Tell:

Stan Lambert had several Christmas ornaments.
Mick Hogg- box made of Myrtle wood
Ed Auker-tried some inside/outside turning plus several other items.
Paul Spencer and Gerry Rhodes also had items for show and tell.

Paul Spencer suggested the club send John Tuttle a get well card to which everyone was in agreement.
Floyd Creekmore explained a way of making some turning tools by using old drill bits.
President Auker adjourned the meeting for time to enjoy coffee and cookies supplied by Billings Hardware.
