Think About Turning Today!
Just back from two weeks in Florida; tanned, rested, and ready for the wife to put me back to work! As preparation for the Fair booth in the Hobby Hall we get going this next meeting with sign-ups (more on that in a bit) and a top making contest. As this is a "loosey-goosey fun time" don't hold me to anything you see here in print. There will be a small committee handling the event. How ever, there will be prizes awarded so get going. 200 tops ready made before we open the booth on the first day would be a good start. As for the contest this Wednesday some of the ideas for categories include: biggest, smallest, longest spinner, tallest, shortest, widest, heaviest, prettiest, best finish, most colorful, largest, and most unique. Time to get and money will determine how many prizes will be available! Use your imagination and have fun. Be prepared to sign-up for shifts at our booth ( for those that have not participated it is a learning experience, promotes our club, and allows members to display some of their projects in our showcase.). To date we have about 17 shifts that members have indicated two months ago that they would man. With a total of 27 three hour shifts and a need to have at least two bodies on hand that means 54 signed up this Wednesday (please) Also we need 4 two-day captains for go-to persons with myself as the back-up chairman. Jerry Fachner signed for one of these so 3 more needed. Remember that "Bic" pens and wheeled vehicles are also good give-a-ways from the booth. We should have some passes available to get in the Fair gate. Also note that the Hobby Hall is air conditioned and quite comfortable on hot days. To enter projects in the Heritage Arts Dept.( not the Fine Arts as in previous years) there is a $5.oo fee per exhibitor ( 5 or more entries and you get a free gate pass. (also available to exhibitors are a half price one day pass for $4 and an all season pass for only $18) Exhibits are received only on Friday, July 31st 12:00 to 6:00 pm and Sat. 12:00 to 4:00 pm in the Montana Pavilion. Prizes are $25 for 1st, $10 for 2nd, and $5 for 3rd for each category. Look on page 95 of the Fair Book for the 6 different divisions for woodturnings. Quick reminder - our next meeting will be on Aug 5th (one week early)

Minutes
Pres. Stan Lambert called the meeting to order at 7:04 P.M..
This month’s guests were Dale Stoll, who was invited by Stan, and Mike Nash. Thanks for coming; we hoped you liked what you saw and will join us as members.
Cookies were provided by Jerry Fachner and Jan (notice the Jan) Lambert. Thanks to you both; they were very good!
Shop joke was blotched by Martin Robinson but he got the idea across anyway.
Show and Tell:
Don Buska presented two vases of segmented-segmented “that’s right” double segmented turning. The larger vase was cherry, walnut and purple heart and the smaller vase of walnut and maple. Another club first from Don!
Bob Orr presented a wooden puzzle to confound and tease our minds.
Martin Robinson presented a calculator holder, possibly another club first to be turned on both a lathe and a milling machine, made of walnut, gabon ebony, and spalted maple.
Dr. Van presented the new club scrapbook with entries such as: Origin of the club Officers through present day Club house meeting areas Projects the club has completed Members educating other members and the public Youngest members Oldest members: Floyd (Creaky) Creekmore and George (What did he say?) Hoffman
Minutes of May 13, 2009 club meeting as reported in the newsletter by club secretary Carol Reimann were approved by the membership.
The treasurer’s report was given by club treasurer Jane Swaby. Jane reported an overall balance of $3,101.15 with all bills paid. The club now has 31 members for year 2009. The motion to accept by Bob Orr was passed.
On health issues Don Buska was treated for heart palpitations and says he is fine. (Let’s all hope!)
Correspondence:
Stan reported on receiving correspondence from AAW and from Vonni Casey of Montana Fair. Vonni was asking if the club would be interested in setting up one lathe to demo at the Heritage Hall as well as our main demo area at the Fine Arts Building. Ray Curtis voiced concern as to whether the club had enough members available to man two sites for 8 days - 9 hours a day. Martin was concerned about security of equipment at two sites across grounds from each other. Members present decided it was a “no.” Rewards for this years Hobby Hall are to be $25, $15, and $5 respectively.
The A&E Committee’s project for July’s meeting will be top turning. Paul Spencer felt this would produce a stockpile to be given away at Montana Fair so people would not have to wait while we turn them out. They will be judged on most original, creative, well turned, best design, longest spin and of course the most made, etc. . . .
Old Business:
Those attending our club demo at Heights ACE Hardware on Saturday, May 30th reported a good time for all. Members thanked Ed Auker for the loan of his great tent and a special thank you to Brady for his instructing Derrick and Micah Reimann during their turning efforts, and for the work of all three of our youngest members on the lathes and off. A big thanks goes out to all that showed up! Now if we could just teach a certain member where to park his pickup and how to reset an electrical breaker. . . .
Stan reported that A&H Turf had sold all of Ron’s walnut that was worth selling and had cut the club a check for $95.85. Jane then made out a check to Trudy for the like amount.
Club members who had instructed at West High during the school year attended a barbecue, partially in their honor and enjoyed themselves.
A club work shop for Saturday, June 13th was cancelled for lack of participation on the proposed date. Mick Hogg felt we should skip this quarter with everyone being so busy and Ed stated that he felt the same way. Martin felt October, after our symposium, might be a better time? Members voted to skip this quarter.
New Business:
Our fearless leader reported that while attending the Bismark, ND symposium he met Bob Folske of Bowman ND, who owns Bob’s Buggy and Wagon Shop. Stan offered Bob a reduced rate for attending our October symposium if Bob would do a half hour to forty-five minute presentation on repairing wagon wheels, probably on Sunday. Sound to me like good entertainment for all the “Big Wheels” in our club.
Stan reported that Kevin Mollett asked to borrow the clubs chairs for a wedding Sunday, June 14th. Members approved.
John Wasden asked if the club by-laws allowed more than a two year term limit for club officers. Jane advise members that the original by-laws called for a two year limit from years 2000 through 2004 but were revised shortly afterwards to a four year limit.” Anyone needing more information might contact Dwaine Beckman since this occurred during his term as club secretary.” Jane also informed us that she had the by-laws at her home for anyone who wanted to read them.
A motion by Mick to move up the August club meeting one week, to August 5th from August 12th was passed by members; a conflict with Montana Fair was the reasoning behind this.
Stan announced there would be a raffle of donated wood (yellow fir) after the meeting.
The monthly program was presented by Ray Curtis and Wayne Stahley on turning salt and pepper mills.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:40 P.M.
