Think About Turning Today!
We began the evening with a presentation on the new meeting format.
Then a call for guests, Staci and Ethan Ostby, followed by a call for health reports in which Dan Schindler announced that the longtime member Les Dyrud had passed away that morning. We were saddened to hear of his passing - Les was a very nice gentleman - he will be missed. Services are by Smith Funeral Home and were held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, Feb 16th 2010, at Terrace Gardens Chapel , 304 34th ST. W. Billings.
V.P. Stan Lambert reported on correspondence from the AAW and by other clubs with upcoming symposiums.
We then began a special celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Yellowstone Woodturners Club. A big thank you to Joyce Fiechtner for providing the ice cream and to club Secretary Carol Reimann for helping Joyce Serve. A cake with champagne bottle shaped candles next to the names of the seven founding members, still with the club, was baked by Costco. Eddy Leuenbger took pictures as each of the original members blew out their candles. Thanks Eddy! Joyce and Carol then served each of those Six members present with the piece of cake with their name on it. The seventh member, John Wasden, could not be reached in time. I apologized for not knowing he was a founding member until less than two days before t he meeting and did not know of a phone number to call in Powell, WY. However, we did get his name on the cake.... Sorry John - we do miss you at our meetings and did acknowledge you as one of the founding members.
Members the returned to their seats for "show and tell". The first presentation was given by DR. Van who as usual has come with a new idea. Upon showing the current progress of the club scrapbook, Dr Van presented his plan to feature photo's of club members shops in the scrapbook. He started with his own shop and Floyd Creekmore volunteered to be next. ( Hang loose everybody the Paparazzi has arrived!) Sounds like a very interesting and fun idea. Next came Ed Auker, "Know one can say I'm not turning now", with a whole bag of bowls including a natural edge no less. He explained that they were all well turned with very smooth transitions from side to bottoms. Next he will probably claim he did them with a skew. But no one can say Ed hasn't been busy. Following Ed was Paul Spencer with another nicely down bowl and then Stan with a lidded box and a clock mounted in a cute little tear-drop shaped turning. We were glad to see Red O'Connell back at our meetings and he presented a huge walnut bowl. (what a popcorn bowl that would make!) and a smaller bowl, a collaborative work with his wife Eva. Red turned the bowl and Eva wood-burned an outline of figures and then painted them and the rest of the bowl. A very attractive result. Staci Ostby our guest for the month along with her husband Ethan , presented a large segmented platter - her first turned project. Staci has been a student of George Hoffman for about eight sessions. She used a pattern from the internet and made the piece from scraps from George's shop. (It needed the cleaning.) George helped Staci glue up the 3" x 12" block and Staci took it from there. Quite a project for a first timer - we hope she joins the club! Ralph Torrence was up next with more of his artesian work, this time in the form of a boot. The wooden sole of the boot looked just like leather, shape and all. Bob Orr presented a very large working model of a wrecker. We could have used it in the parking area. Darrald Ferrin showed a nice natural edge bowl and a smaller bowl of chokecherry - so nice and colorful. Dan Vanderhoof was lasted with a small lidded box, beautiful - what a talented and varied group we have.
The monthly presentation was by Dan Schindler and covered the bowl gouge and it's uses including the proper presentation to the wood and methods of sharpening these tools. He did make shavings and turned a very thin and well shaped bowl. It was most interesting to watch his drawings on the tablet. We all learn much from Dan!
