March 2006                          Vol. 7, No. 3

Minutes:

President Ed Auker opened the meeting at 7:00 PM Wednesday February 8, 2006 There were 29 members present.

Auker asked if there were any corrections or additions to the minutes as printed in the newsletter. None appearing he declared the minutes approved as printed.

He then called on Mick Hogg for the treasurers report, after giving the report, Mick stated that there were still about 20 members from 2005 that had not paid their dues and as of the April meeting those not yet paid up would be declared delinquent and no longer members.

Correspondence:  Auker had received a letter from John Spencer stating that he was not able to attend many meetings because of conflicting meetings, but that he still wanted to remain a member.

Auker had received information regarding the turning symposium at Utah that will be held June 15-17.   It is  suggested that you bring your own lathe.

The cost is $220.00 per member and the cost for the spouse is $120.00. This charge is to be paid in advance.  After May 1st the price goes up.

Auker also got a letter from John Hill of the AAW advising of the AAW symposium being held in Louisville, KY in June.

He also urged everyone to pay their dues to the AAW and stated that it was necessary for every officer of the local club to belong as this is required for the club to be covered by the AAW insurance.

One other piece of correspondence was from Russ Fairfield advising that he had a tape covering finishing your turnings at a cost of $75.00

Committee Reports:  Committee of Advancement and Education reported by Red O’Connell.  He said they had gotten together for a meeting. One thing they brought up was that we should take advantage of Ron Musgrave's offer to use his shop and have at least one meeting a month.  Red also stated that the North Dakota symposium at Bismarck will be held April 1 and 2.   They have seven lathes available, but it is suggested that you bring your own lathe as this is a hands on symposium and this way you will be assured of having a lathe to work on.

Red also brought several of his home made jigs used for tool sharpening and he also handed out fliers showing how to make your own tool sharpening jig.

Old Business:  Mick Hogg advised that he had a box available to collect all the tops that members had made.

Jane Swaby presented a suggestion box and note pad for writing your suggestions of what you might like to see done in our club.

New Business:  Dan Schindler brought up for discussion, what we as a club would like to do regarding awards at the upcoming fair of 2006.  After much discussion a motion was made seconded and passed that the club furnish three $25.00 awards: one for each class of turning.  If there are only two classes then the third award to go to Judge's Choice.

Motion made seconded and passed that the club give TJ Comstock (new owner of Billings Hardware) a membership in the club just as we have in the past with Walt and Mary Ricker.

March 3-5 will be the Home Improvement Show and TJ was not sure if the Billings Hardware had space enough at this show to have our Club put on a turning demonstration like we have in the past. TJ was going to check it out and get back to Ed Auker and if it is possible for us to put on a demonstration, Ed will contact the members who signed the sign up sheet advising them of the hours that they will be needed. .

Open Shop:  Dan Schindler suggested that we do not have any more sessions at Ron Musgrave’s shop that runs for such a long time like the one held on January 21 which ran for about six hours, as this really tired Ron out. Dan suggested that we limit these sessions to 3 to 4 hours.

Treasurer's Report:  2006 Dues are due.  If not received this month, your membership for 2006 will be beyond its grace period.  (Hint, Hint, Hint.....)

Miscellaneous:  President Auker called on volunteers to serve on an Auditing Committee. The following volunteered their services Jane Swaby (appointed chairperson), Jerry Rhoades, and Les Dyrud.

Show and Tell:  We had the largest "show and tell" session that the club has ever had.  I tried to count the number of items available, but could not see them all.  I would guess we have over 40 items on display and think the most impressive ones were Don Buska’s "stick work".  Some pictures of February's turnings are available on this page.

Closing:  At the close of the meeting, everyone enjoyed coffee and cookies supplied by the Billings Hardware after which Mick Hogg set up the tool sharpening equipment.  I saw John Tuttle making short chisels out of long ones.
