May 2006                          Vol. 7, No. 5

Minutes:

Minutes of the meeting held April 12, 2006

President Ed Auker opened the meeting at 7:00 PM and introduced our one guest, LuAnna’s mother. There were 26 members present.

Prior to the opening of the meeting, TJ stuck his head in and thanked everyone who helped put on the demonstration at the tool sale.

President Auker asked if there were and additions or corrections to the minutes as printed in the newsletter. There being none they were accepted as printed.

Mick Hogg gave the treasurers report of money on hand at the end of March he also had a print out of members who had paid their dues which now stands at 37.

Motion was made, seconded, and passed that we wait one more month, before dropping from membership those who have not paid their dues.

Correspondence:

Dan Schindler had received some correspondence from MetraPark regarding the fair and there will be only two categories this year 1-beginners and 2-advanced.  He has set up three $25.00 cash awards from the Yellowstone Woodturners.  One for each of the above listed and the third one for Judge's Choice.

Old Business:  None.

New Business:

Glen Hall reported that Floyd Creekmore has had some cancer surgery and that he is now at home. A sheet of paper was sent around for the members to send a greeting to "Creeky".  The secretary was instructed to buy a few get well cards to have on hand at the meeting for this purpose and to use one of the cards to send the notes from the members at this meeting to "Creeky".

There will be two open shops at Ron Musgrave's shop starting at 1:00 PM on Saturday April 22 and Sunday April 23.  A sign up sheet was sent around to have a head count and the main purpose of these two open shops will be to make shavings. If you have a special project you want to work on, that is also possible.

Ralph Torrence, being under the weather, his brother Dave reported for him regarding the Jail House Gallery in Hardin. The set up dates for this is June 1-2 &3 The items that you bring should show your name, your price, type of wood it is made out of and this information will be placed on cards that will be set up next to your turning. These items to be on display the entire month of June. Any item you want in this display should be brought to the May meeting and the committee will be responsible for getting these to Hardin.

Most of the items will be displayed on tables and they may have a small display case for small items. The Sandstone Corporation will get the walls for their display.

Also needed are items for display in the windows (these will be exposed to the sun) these items are to attract attention to people walking by the gallery as to what is available inside.

The gallery will charge 20% on any item that is sold.

Marjorie Ferrin passed around information on books and CD’s along with a sign up sheet so you can let her know what you would be interested in for her to purchase for the library.

Wayne Hoffman gave a report on the demonstration at the tool sale at the Billings Hardware that was held on Saturday April 8. There were 3 lathes available and they were busy just about all day long with a lot of interest by a lot of the hardware’s customers. Several tops were given away. There was a 10X10 shelter available and the demonstration closed down at 4:00 PM and by the amount of shavings cleaned up there had been a lot of turning.

Wayne was given a round of applause for the good job he had done in lining up turners.

Dave Torrence said he had a lot of pieces of black walnut in his pickup by the back door if anyone wanted some.

Don Buska said he had promised to teach people how to make the stick work that he displayed a few meetings ago, but that he had been out of town and will put on demonstrations Tuesday and Thursday April 18 and 20.

President Auker declared the meeting closed and everyone enjoyed coffee and cookies compliments of the Billings Hardware.

Committee Reports:

The only committee report called on was Red O’Connell for the Advance & Education committee and Red Called on Jane Swaby who said that Ralph Torrence had given a good demonstration at the last meeting and reminded everyone to make use of the suggestion box.

Bismarck Symposium.

Ed and LuAnna Auker had attended the Bismarck Symposium and Ed gave a really detailed report on it -  this report to give us some insight should our club decide to do something like this sometime in the future.

They charged $85.00 per person, including their own members, only two of their members did not pay this amount and one of them furnished room and board for the three demonstrators and the other one furnished the door prizes. Ed said these North Dakotans did not furnish only a set amount of prizes, but they saw too it that everyone got a door prize.

The cost of the demonstrators were: Two of them were paid $500.00 each for two days and the third one was paid $400.00 per day for two days for a total cost of the demonstrators $2800.00 They were also paid for travel cost, but all three of them traveled in one car, so that held that cost down.

The club received a $500.00 grant from AAW. $1,000.00 sponsorship from a local arts & crafts public assistance group and a local gasoline dealer was also a sponsor.

The 3 demonstrators were Trent Bosch, Pete Holtus and Allen Jensen.

The club suggested you bring your own lathe, that way you always had a lathe to work one even if it wasn’t always your own lathe. And it was pretty much a hands on, learning process. The afternoon on the second day the demonstrators showed what they were able to do without having to teach one of the local attendees

Librarian Notes:

A video and a book will be added to the library.  These two received the most votes by the membership at the April meeting.  Other videos/books received considerable interest and will be added to our library between now and the end of the year (approximately one each month).

"Off Center Turning" by Chris Stott
In this video, Chris focuses on turning wood using more than one center point.  He shows how to use off center turning to create candlesticks, boxes, bowls, a table leg, and more.

"All Screwed Up" by John Berkeley
This is a newly published book and includes instructions for twenty turned puzzles and boxes featuring chased threads.  Many of the turned and threaded puzzles were adopted from a book written in 1893 entitled "Puzzles Old and New".
