Think About Turning Today!

With the Symposium out of the way we can look at what we can do in the months ahead; what we as individuals desire from the club's activities;  plus how much effort we want to expend of our time and talents. I can only suggest that enthusiasm and diligence in any endeavor usually produces beneficial results.  That said we need to look at all of our past activities, decide on a game plan that a majority wants, and draw the line on what we can do. ( "Tis better to do a few things well, rather than attempt to much and fall short of of the quality we expect of ourselves")
Items I'd like to see us discuss on top of a thorough look at the Fine Arts exhibiting are symposiums, guest demos, open shops, club programs, outside club demos, and West High classes.
Other items that will be on the agenda for the Wed. Nov. 12th meeting will include burls of Box Elder for sale in Great Falls, Mesquite from down south, and the availability of a new woodturning magazine out of Snohomish, Washington.
A reminder: bring any woodturning related items for the monthly raffle that you care to donate.
    See you at Ron's shop,
    Pres. Stan Lambert

Minutes

President Stan Lambert opened the meeting at 7:00 pm sharp on Wednesday Oct. 8, 2008 at Ron’s shop. There were 16 members present and no guests.

Show and Tell

Ralph Torrence showed two segmented urns he made of ash, black walnut, ebony with a patterned lid. Very impressive and showed true craftsman work.

Dave Torrence showed a small goblet made of redwood, using a skew on the outside and a gouge on the inside.

Dwaine Beckman showed a cedar bowl made from a neighbor’s tree. Dwaine, are you sure you didn’t cut down the tree to get turning wood?

Mick Hogg showed another of his nicely created miniature clocks made from a golf ball and a turned pedestal. Patterns of the construction were available, and Bob Orr said he could provide used golf balls for anyone wanting to take on this project.

Mick also had a couple of pens made from Paul Amerallo/Datewood and Ironwood/Holly. Very nice indeed!

Stan Lambert showed a screwdriver handle and a pen made from Olive Wood he brought back from Italy.

Treasurer Report

Jane gave a report on the receipts and disbursements of the Club since the last report in September, 2008 and explained that the details (receipts and expenses) of the 2008 Symposium held last weekend would be delayed until next month, since not all of the expenses have been received. Jane’s report was accepted.

Ray Curtis gave a preliminary report of the Symposium finances, and once the final expected Grant dollars are received from the AAW, the Symposium should be in the positive column with perhaps a $50. profit. He will report at the November meeting with the final numbers.

Other Business

A motion was made and passed by the membership to transfer $300. to the Library Fund.

Marjorie Ferrin gave a report on new books and DVD’s added to the library.

Stan Lambert had numerous photos of the symposium, and of the Elm tree being taken down at Ray’s place.

The club received a $25.00 check from the Metra Fair Board for a peoples choice award. There was a limited discussion of the Fair Activity, but major discussion will wait for the November meeting.

Dave Torrence said his neighbor is taking down several Honey Locus trees and if anyone wants pieces, please come by early Thursday.

A motion was made and passed to give Trudy Chester a $100. gift certificate to the Windmill for her support, letting the clubuse Ron’s lathes for various projects and Ron’s shop for our monthly meetings.

Stan Lambert reported that the West High Woodshop teacher had some mini laths reconditioned and those lathes would be at West High, therefore, our members would not have to take their own lathers to school when the program starts this year.

Program

John Wasden and Ray Curtis (mostly John) gave a program on sanding and finishing projects. An informative discussion was generated among the members. (NO ONE LIKES TO SAND!!)

Reported: Ray Curtis (minor assistant to the secretary)

NOTE

Thank you, Ray for taking the minutes for me. I was unable to attend the meeting and your support was appreciated. (I know you will get even).

And thank you very much for all your time and energy you spent on the symposium. It was a great success due to your hard work.

RAY, THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!!
