October 2006 Vol. 7, No. 10
Minutes:
With our President Ed Auker being in Newport, Oregon, Vice President Wayne Hoffman opened our meeting at 655 PM, There were 29 members and guests present.
SHOW AND TELL
The show and tell tonight started out with Dave Torrence showing off a game board he had made with a Chinese game built inside a box and the lid consisted of a chess/checker board top, this was made of various woods, some of which were oak, purple heart, yellow heart and walnut.
Ray Curtis had a tray made of myrtle wood and a bowl of ambrosia maple, he also had a serving type bowl turned of 2"X12" ash (unfinished) which had evidently been green wood as it was starting to warp.
Stan Lambert had a huge bowl (17") turned from blue spruce finished with Tung oil, which he said proceeded to crack as it was being turned. He also had a bowl made of Pico tee wood finished with Tung oil.
Stan also showed a bowl made of ash that Joyce Flechtner had been turning during the demonstration at the fair and was having trouble with and Stan tried to help her with it and the bowl blew up and Stan took it home and glued it up and finished it off and brought it to the meeting.
Ron Musgrave had a nice little decorative turning that looked like it would make a nice Christmas tree ornament.
Bob Orr finally got his gum ball machine built. (Thanks to George Hoffman and the web) while passing it around he said everyone was entitled to one gum ball and if they got a black one he would give them $5.00 (of course there were no black balls in the machine)
Paul Spencer had watched Ed Auker make some Christmas tree ornaments while demonstrating at the fair, so he went home and made one.
Floyd Creekmore found his missing turning. Made of curly maple and cherry wood ( the cherry wood was from flooring his dad had left over while doing construction work in Kalispell) This is the bowl that Creeky had registered for showing at the fair and when he went down to check at the fair the bowl was missing and they looked all over for it and when Creeky got home he found it still packed in the box that he had used to take his turnings to the fair.
Creeky’s bowl had about seven coats of Tung oil.
Dan Shindler came to the meeting after the Show &Tell was over, but he passed around a real nice ash goblet that he had made with a stem and four feet (the feet made from a branch crotch)
MISCELLANEOUS
John Wasden showed the club an example of some more free wood where he had cut into a large ash tree and run into some nails which were about impossible to see from the outside of the tree because the bark had grown over the nail heads.
MINUTES
Paul Spencer handed out hard copies of the minutes of the last meeting to those who had not received them from the web site.
Wayne Hoffman asked if there were any corrections to the minutes of the Aug 9th meetings.
John Wasden said that the news letter shows that the Oct 11th meeting, Presentation: sanding and finishing, by John Tuttle and should read by John Wasden,, However this was not in the minutes portion of the news letter but under the title of "Up Coming Events" and not in the minutes. Wasden also stated that this presentation will be on sanding only and not on sanding and finishing.
Minutes approved as printed on web site.
TREASURER'S REPORT
Mick Hogg’s report shows that we are still in good shape financially, He also reported that he had paid the fair board the money to cover the awards presented at the fair by the Yellowstone Woodturners.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Ray Curtis passed out several printouts which included the AAW symposium in Portland, meeting program updates since their meeting in January, review membership, suggestion box etc.
John Tuttle Reported on the woodturning demonstration at the fair and thanked all who helped out with the demonstrations and displayed the Judges Choice and Peoples Choice ribbons that the club received. He also said Barnes and Noble awarded the club a $15.00 prize which was suggested that this award be used towards some book for the library.
OLD BUSINESS
Northern Rockies Woodworking Guild in Bozeman, the Secretary reported that the Al Stirt demonstration will be held on Oct 6th and that the Guild had held their meeting Tuesday evening and that there were still some openings available in the hands on portion of their program at the cost of $100.00 per person and if anyone is interested in this they should contact Tom Robinson in Bozeman to get signed up.
Red O’Connell said that they will only have six people in each hands on class and that registration must be sent in ahead of time.
V, P, Hoffman called on Martin Robinson to report on the Summer Fair, he said this was still done on an individual bases, but that they may make an exception for our club, but it sounds like that decision will not be made by them until their committee meets in January or February .
Power for the lathe’s is still a problem, Martin was asking if we could run a lathe with a generator ??There is a power pole off to one side, but permission to hook up would be necessary
This Summer Fair is held in North Park usually around the 8th of July. They will charge the club a $250.00 entry fee and a $20.00 registration fee, but there would not be any percentage charge for items members would sell.
Sounds like they want one person in charge of selling items, and this person would be responsible to the club member having items for sale.
NEW BUSINESS
VP Hoffman called on Red O’Connell of the Education Committee to make a presentation.
Red said that at the fair Dan Schindler, Ron Musgrave and himself had discussed the possibility of having our own symposium type program, perhaps at Ron’s shop and some of the ladies had said they would provide noon lunches.
Some of the programs discussed were, Segmented turning, Green wood turning, Sharpening tools etc.
Regarding the segmented turning, it was suggested that this be put on by George Hoffman, Mick Hogg, Floyd Creekmore and Dwaine Beckman, Dan Schindler had agreed to put on the Green Wood turning,
A date of Saturday January 20, 2007 has been set up for this symposium, a charge will be made, somewhere in the $25.00 range which will cover the luncheon put on by the ladies. Red said that the segmented turners do not want any money for their part in this symposium, so it was suggested that any money left over after the cost of the luncheon be placed in the raffle fund of the club and be used towards getting a professional turning in for a demonstration somewhere down the line.
George and Dwaine had been talking together about some of the equipment used in segmented turning it would be easier for them to put on the solid segmented portion in Georges shop and the open segmented turning in Dwaine’s shop. Especially with the open segmented turning, Dwaine has jigs that will only fit on his lathe.
During the discussions of these demonstrations it was mentioned that there is a possibility of having Green wood demonstration at Ron’s shop and the same time have perhaps alternate solid segment/open segment (morning & afternoon) at George’s and Dwaine’s shops . There will be further discussion on this at the upcoming meetings as we have until January to prepare for it.
With a show of hands, there were 17 members who would be willing to attend this sort of a symposium.
Red suggested that we have a drawing at this symposium, to ad interest, perhaps the winner would get his registration money back. Or some such prize.
TJ was invited in so we could find out about the upcoming tool sale and it was decided that this would be held on Saturday Oct 14th from perhaps 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and a sign up sheet was passed around.
Note anyone that participates in this demonstration, Must be a member of the AAW so that the club is covered with insurance.
TJ was also told that if he has any thing of interest to the club members that he should contact Paul Spencer and Paul would put it in our news letter.
If any member has anything for sale or interest to club members they can also have Paul put this in the news letter.
OCTOBER DEMONSTRATION
At the October 11th meeting, John Wasden will demonstrate various sanding techniques ;and asked for volunteers . Stan Lambert and Red O’Connell to assist.
Meeting adjourned at 805 PM after which everyone enjoyed coffee and cookies compliments of the Billings Hardware.
DEMONSTRATION
The demonstration tonight is "Three Sided Turning" by Red O’Connell. He passed out printouts that shows how you take six pieces of wood cut at 60 degrees and 12 inches long, mark the center and suggested using ash or pine. First making a holder for each end to hold the six pieces of wood together while turning.
You turn these pieces between the drive center and tail stock
You then use skew chisel to make this round, then make a couple beads in the center and one on each end, after which you reverse these six pieces in the holders, mark the location of the beads and again turn it round making the beads on this side.
Then you turn these six pieces in the holders the third time (thus the 3 sided turning) and make it round and then form the beads on this side.
When completed each of the six pieces of wood that you started with have the two beads in the middle and one on each end of each of the three sides.
Thanks Red
