Minutes:

MINUTES OF AUG 9, 2006

Meeting called to order by President Ed Auker at 7:00 Pm with 28 members and guests present.

The guests tonight were Cora Azpeitia and Mabel Scanlon daughters of Francis and Jane Swaby and Susan Gingery who is a cousin of Jane Swaby, Also guests present where Ron Stafford and his son Nacho. Welcome to our guests of tonight

MINUTES

President Auker called for the minutes of the July meeting. Normally these would have been printed on the internet, but being the change over of the internet being now handled by Paul Spencer and the internet password had not yet been turned over to Paul from Randy the August news letter was not on the internet it time for the meeting.

The minutes had been E-mailed to Paul by the Secretary, so Paul made hard copies of the minutes and passed them out to the members present.

After a few minor corrections. The minutes were accepted as corrected. .

Treasurers report

President Auker called on Treasurer Mick Hogg for his report which covered the period up to and including Aug 9, 2006 and we are still solvent.

Correspondence

The Correspondence this month consisted mainly of advertising.

Committee Reports

Fair Committee

John Tuttle reported that the tear down will be done on Sunday Aug 20th

John had fair tickets for those who would be working the fair and passed them out, he said there would be two lathes available for the demonstration and that he would furnish his shop vac for clean up and asked everyone to bring their own tools for the demonstrations. He has 3/4" pads in front of the lathes which should make it comfortable to stand and turn.

He had asked about having a dust collector, but none was available.

Both lathes have 1' spindles with 8 threads per inch

A & E Committee

Red O’Connell suggested that the club give a prize for the most unique item turned from the bowling pins that were passed out to some members and display these turnings at the front of the meeting room with numbers on them and have the members present pick out the most unique item, This to be done at the November meeting.

Jane Swaby suggested that there may be a possibility of the club getting invited back to the Jail House Gallery or some other gallery and suggested that when turning keep in mind to make something that would qualify for this type of display.

The subject was brought up as to how the club was to pay for the Club awards at the fair, and it was thought that a check had already been sent to the Montana Fair to cover.

Old Business

Dave Torrence reported on the Jail House Gallery at Hardin saying that second month sales amounted to $402-50.

Some of our club members had decided to go privately with the Gallery leaving some of their turnings there for sale.

Thanks to Paul Spencer for taking over the news letter. As stated earlier, he is still working on the web site.

Paul is still short the minutes for the May meeting, which LuAnna Auker substituted as secretary and Beckman said he had a hard copy of these minutes and would type them out and forward to Paul.

Martin Robinson asked if there would be any club interest in the Summer Fair?? It was mentioned that this is more an individual demonstration, instead of club type function. Martin is to check this out and get back to the club.

Good of Order

The subject of a Christmas party, (which had been mentioned last month) was brought up but do to lack of interest, it was tabled

Ed made the comment for some reason that everyone likes LuAnna better than Ed (I wonder why)

Show & Tell

Dan Schindler had turned an item from box elder and had sanded it with 400 grit, finished with water-lox then used steel wool and buffed it .

Paul Spence made a large segmented vase, using 16 segments to the circle and using Purple heart, yellow heart, maple and black walnut.. which he planned to give to his Mother.

Dave Torrence made two items from apricot wood

John Tuttle made a bowl of Mesquite , one of apple wood, two bowls from butter nut, one black walnut bowl and a hat from red elm.

No demonstration tonight and motion made seconded and passed to adjourn and enjoy coffee and cookies compliments of the Billings Hardware.

Montana Fair Fine Arts update:

From Dan Schindler

I recently received the judging report from Montana Fair 2006. The figures this year did not include the number of entries in each category or the total entries for the woodturning class so I don't have the statistics that I had last year.  I do have the judging results for all the of the woodturning lots and know that there were some entries that did not receive awards so feel that we did well at providing woodturning entries this year.

I also received a thank you note from the supervisor of the fine arts department for the special premiums provided by the Woodturners.

Lot 1 Beginner bowl honorable mention- Stan Lambert

Lot7 Advanced bowl honorable mention- John Wasden

Judges choice- Donald (Red) O'Connell

I will retain a  copy of the judging results so if you would like any specific information from it let me know.

Thanks to everyone who entered Montana Fair this year.  It's time now to be thinking about what you can make to enter in Montana Fair 2007.  There are a lot of members that did not enter anything this year and I'm sure most of you have turned something during the last two years that is suitable to enter.  Let's do it next year.........Dan Schindler
