Think About Turning Today!

Dear Club Members  - An unusual thing happened on the way last months meeting - many of our usually prompt members arrived late.  So I delayed the start to about 7:15 to accommodate their arrival but found that with our new format the business meeting runs way too late.  With that in mind we will have to start at 7:00 PM sharp so please be forewarned.

Lu Auker did supply some very good devil's food (appropriate for us) cupcakes.  Thank you Lu!  Now who ran off with the extra's?

Thankfully there were no new health reports.

We received correspondence from the AAW pushing new membership and clarifying who is eligible for their insurance coverage.  Only AAW members turning at symposiums, demo's, ECT.  with an AAW chapter club are covered.  The insurance covers only those injured by objects thrown from the lathe or by the demonstrator and not the demonstrator themselves.    In other words if you injure yourself and/or others your personal insurance (if any) must cover you and the AAW insurance will cover others provided you are an AAW member.  they also sent new membership applications and registration forms for the 2010 Annual AAW Symposium in Hartford, Connecticut.  the 24th Annual Symposium will be held June 18 - 20th and will feature Trent Bosch, Jimmy Clewes, Sharon Doughtie, Cindy Drozda, John Jordan, and Hans Weissflog as well as many others.  Panelists David Ellsworth, J Paul Fennell, Keith Gotschall, Alan Lacer, Mike  Mahoney, Bihn Pho and Betty Scarpino and again many others.  Sounds like a who's who of the turning world.

We also received reg. forms and info from the Woodturners of Olympia, WA.  for their 5 day event starting July 24th with a symposium featuring Alan Lacer, Bill Luce and Dave Schweitzer and then 4 days of hands-on classes with a max of 8 students each day.   Please contact me for reg. and info forms for all events or see me at the next meeting.

Show and tell was started off with Dr. Van and the club scrapbook featuring Creeky's Shop.  Nice shop!  Next Bob Orr with a logging truck.  Bob stated that with the nice weather ahead his involved projects will have to chill for awhile.  Derrick Reimann showed his finish he applied on the bowl Dan Schindler turned at last months presentation.  Derrick also presented a lidded box he turned at last months West High class.  How about that!.  Dan brought a whole bag of broken and cracked failed projects just to show new turners that we all have mistakes and failures and not to be afraid to try.  Dave Torrence showed an oak bowl that was turned wet and then finish turned after being left to dry for about 6 weeks.  A very nice results that showed we should not be hesitant to use oak in more bowl turnings.

Ed Auker was our monthly presenter and showcased buffing projects and systems to achieve this.  He also showed the use of some specialty tools and how to turn with them.  Ed invited members to try some hands-on with these and other tools.

The monthly business Meeting included a committee report by Paul Spencer on the West High School class followed by last minutes by Sec. Carol Reimann and the Treasures Report by Treas. Jane Swaby _ both approved by committee members.  Old Business showed 30 members have paid their dues to date.  The Officers also decided on the business of weather or not the club checking account balance should be mailed members.  The officers voted "yes" if the information was requested by a fully paid-up club member.  They will not be included in the minutes that are posted on the web site. Under New Business a $75.00 funding was approved for the Club Librarian to purchase the DVD's of the AAW's 2010 Symposium.  $125.00 in funding was approved for the purchasing the club's website for another year.  The Officers also were in favor of an Easter Egg Contest as a club turning project for the April meeting.  Prizes will be awarded for the top five entrees.

Submitted by Club President - Martin Robinson.
