Think About Turning Today!

THINK ABOUT TURNING TODAY!

As our weather holds it is hard to be inside turning; but there are lots of outdoor activities concerning our woodturning that can be completed, i.e. stocking up on our wood supply, chain sawing those logs into bowl blanks, working on building a new shop (?) Yes the weather is cooperating, but it still is slow going. A big "thank you" to Dan Vanderhoof and Gary Slanina for a day's help on my shop in Oct. We were able to finish sheeting the roof with OSB. Since then I have covered the roof with titanium; and am finally dry inside. Also put in an inside "end wall" with a door to keep the wind from whooping though. At our up coming meeting on the 11th: We have new AAW forms available to join the Nal't organization if you do not already belong, we plan on our usual business meeting, a demo for a program, and the raffle should be super with 3 gift Cert. from Craft Supply, knives from Ed L. and a supply of wood and other possible items that tend to show up. Last month's great demos by Floyd Creekmore, Duane Beckman, and Dan Vanderhoof are an example of the participation that make a technology club like ours both enjoyable and helpful. Hopefully we will present some ground rules for a annual Christmas decoration contest to be held at our December meeting. Hope to see you at the meeting, Stan Lambert, Pres.

October 14, 2009

Pres. Stan Lambert called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M.

Gary Slanina from Pompey’s Pillar introduced himself, brought show and tell items, and joined the club as our newest member. Welcome Gary!

Martin Robinson supplied the treats. Thank You Martin. The shop joke was supplied by Bob Orr. No Thanks Bob.

Show and Tell:

Gary: showed a miner’s air mask that could be used in the wood shop. He also brought both a lidded and an unlidded. box, both of box elder. A “bullet clock,” shaped as a 50 caliber shell, made of tulipwood was very well turned.

Ray Curtis: four elm bowls in medium to large sizes.

Don Buska: a very well turned double segmented walnut vessel and a “goldenmean” gauge made to spec. from a handout sheet given out during Trent Bosch’s presentation at our symposium.

George Hoffman: also a “golden rule” gauge of the same order.

Bob Orr: A wooden birdhouse - castle-like - ball dispenser creation. That is as close as I can come to describing it.

Dan Vanderhoof: presented a “transitional vessel” made of bloodwood and maple with a feature segmented ring of cedar. Very nice! Dan also handed out an article by Jim Rodgers on transitional vessel turning. Thanks Dan!

Paul Spencer: A beautiful thin walled bowl of alder wood, pierced and carved Christmas scene with a center candle holder, and card holders of tiger maple.

Dr. Van: showed us his continuing work on the club scrapbook with new pics from the fair and his plans to add pics from the symposium which we can view at the Nov. club meeting.

Minutes: By secretary Carol Reimann were approved as read..

Treasurer’s Report: Jane Swaby reported  in general expenses for an additional camera for use at the symposium. After symposium expenses the club had a pre-meeting balance were given.

Jane also reported that the club has 38 paid members.

Health Reports: Mick Hogg reported on the condition of Dan Schindler. It appears that Dan had gone bird hunting - got pneumonia which developed into a light stroke which Dan has recovered from and has his speech back. We are all hoping that Dan continues to recover and that we get him back.

We are sad to hear of club secretary, Carol Reimann’s father passing away; our thoughts are with her.

Correspondence: Bismark, ND wood turners club has announced an April 9th, 10th, 11th date for their next symposium, with presenters Cindy Drozda, Rex Burningham and Stewart Batty; this could be a real good one to attend.

Committee Reports: The A&E Committee gave a big “thank you “ to everyone that helped with the symposium: especially the food providers, demonstrators, and those that opened their homes. Dr. Van commented that he felt Trent Bosch was an excellent presenter (I think we all agree) and that the Career Center was an excellent facility for the symposium. I personally would like to thank all the people who helped with the set-up and clean-up - a very fast and excellent job and especially to Lloyd Reimann who went the extra mile - outstanding work!

Paul Spencer and Dr. Van volunteered for a committee to try to secure an AAW Grant to help pay for next year’s symposium. Stan reported that we had secured two new members as a result of the symposium:

Mike Turley - our custodian at the Career Center

Jeff Meide - West High School shop teacher (Jeff also donated $17.50 to the club.)

Jane reported a breakdown of symposium expenses:

Presenters’ salary, food & travel $1826.45

Door Prizes $ 138.35

General expenses (including custodial) $ 134.00

Food Expenses $ 253.90

Total -$2352.70

Income: (19 attendees) $1460.00

Donation $ 17.50

Total $1477.50

New Member Dues $ 12.50

Total $1490.00

Symposium Overrun: -$ 862.70

Not bad for few in attendance and no AAW Grant for 2009. Free use of the Career Center with only custodial costs is a big, big plus.

Stan asked that a “thank you card” be sent to Stan barr of the Career Center - approved! Maybe someone might send a wood turning as well. Anyone have an extra around?

Old Business:

Stan asked members to send a greeting car and $100. check to Robin Fraizer of Clinton, Iowa for supplying the nice walnut wood for after meeting raffle - approved! Stan handed out A&H Turf wood price sheets.

New Business:

V.P. Martin Robinson gave a short presentation of (perspective from behind the lathe) on what it’s like from a symposium presenter’s viewpoint. Stan reported on the progress of his new shop.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:00 P.M.

Sale of walnut turning blocks followed meeting - great wood! Great price!

Program followed wood sale:

Dan Vanderhoof on transitional vessels

Duane Beckman on keyed wine bottle stoppers using a pin chuck

Floyd Creekmore on how to turn multi-colored wood gavels
